Vitamin B12 Treatment for Traumatic Nerve Injury in Dental Surgery: A Review

Abstract

|
Traumatic nerve injury is one of rare but serious complications that clinicians can encounter during dental surgery.
Mostly, it is recovered within 6 months, but it might cause persistence hypoesthesia at less than 3.6%, and neuropathic pain, complaining of various unpleasant and abnormal sensation such as burning, itching, triggered pain, or allodynia.
To treat the neuropathic pain, the first choice is the medication and vitamin B12 can be used. Vitamin B12 is an effective in reducing the pain and in nerve regeneration by promoting myelin sheath and increasing the expression of neurotrophic factors. Therefore, for better prognosis, immediate administration of vitamin B12 after traumatic damage is required, and combination therapy with other drugs might have synergy effects.
